Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic and public talker. She is the co-founder of Feminist Frequency a website that provides commentary and videos on the representation of women in pop cultural. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, media critic as well as an award-winning feminist for nearly a decade. She is the founder and executive director of Feminist Frequency, a not-for-profit educational website that explores representations of women within popular cultural narratives. Determined to challenge the assumptions that are associated with females in popular culture, she is also working to raise issues related specifically to the harassment of women and the other minorities of individuals in the internet environment. The holder of a master's degree in political and social thought from York University Sarkeesian is also a much sought-after public speaking engagement and has given speeches at TEDxWomen XOXO Festival and the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. She was a fan of gender issues and feminism since at a very young age. In 2009, when she was a student at the University of Toronto, Sarkeesian created the website Feminist Frequency. She had a plan to launch a web series examining gender representation in video games. However, she found herself at the center for an online harassment campaign. It didn't deter her, however it did strengthen the determination of a feminist critic of media. She has won numerous awards due to her significant contributions to the world of feminism. Anita Sarkeesian is an award awarded media critic, and director of Feminist Frequency an educational organization that explores the representations of women in pop culture and the narratives that surround them.
